English Language Arts Department

Welcome to our English Community!

At Burke County High School, our English Department believes in the power of words—the words you read, the words you write, and the words you speak. Every student has unique ideas, stories, and perspectives worth sharing with the world.

This year, we're committed to helping every student discover their voice, build confidence, and develop skills that matter both in school and in life. When students understand what they're working toward, they're more motivated, engaged, and successful.

Below are our five department-wide goals—what we want for every student in every English class this year.

  • Why this matters:
Everyone has something important to say. When you discover your authentic voice as a writer and speaker, you gain confidence and power—not just for essays and presentations, but for life. Your voice is what makes your ideas uniquely yours.

    What You’ll Experience in class:

    • Writing stories, essays, and creative pieces that sound like YOU—not like a textbook or someone else
    • Reflecting on your writing journey and celebrating what you do well
    • Exploring digital storytelling, podcasts, videos, and other creative ways to share your work
    • Presenting your work to classmates, family, or wider audiences

At Home: Ask your student what they're writing about. Encourage them to share their work with you—even rough drafts! Show interest in their ideas and topics.

  • Why this matters:
Strong readers can understand, question, and enjoy all kinds of texts—novels, articles, poems, videos, and more. These skills help you learn independently, think critically, form your own opinions, and connect with the world around you.

    What You’ll Experience in class:

    • Demonstrating your understanding through reading checks, quizzes, discussions, and activities
    • Writing and talking about what you read, always backing up your ideas with evidence from the text
    • Choosing some of your own books, articles, or media to read and analyze
    • Learning strategies to tackle challenging texts and unfamiliar vocabulary

At Home: Talk with your student about what they're reading. Ask them what they think about the characters, the author's message, or connections to their own life.

  • Why this matters:
Knowing how to construct a strong argument—and recognize weak ones—is a life skill. Whether you're writing a college essay, participating in a debate, navigating social media, or standing up for what you believe, these skills empower you to think clearly and persuade effectively.

    What You’ll Experience in class:

    • Writing argumentative essays and creating projects that use credible evidence and logical reasoning
    • Participating in debates, Socratic seminars, and structured discussions about controversial topics
    • Analyzing arguments in media, advertising, speeches, and current events
    • Learning to find, evaluate, and properly cite reliable sources

At Home: When your student expresses an opinion, ask them 'Why do you think that?' or 'What's your evidence?' This builds critical thinking in everyday conversation.

  • Why this matters:
Learning from others and sharing your ideas makes everyone stronger. Being open-minded, respectful, and collaborative prepares you for college, careers, and citizenship. These are the teamwork skills that employers value most.

    What You’ll Experience in class:

    • Working in pairs and groups on projects, presentations, and problem-solving activities
    • Peer reviewing classmates' work and receiving constructive feedback on your own
    • Leading or participating in class discussions where diverse viewpoints are welcomed
    • Reflecting on your role in group work and what you learn from different perspectives

At Home: Ask your student about group projects. Discuss what makes teamwork successful and how to navigate disagreements respectfully.

  • Why this matters:
Learning doesn't stop when class ends or when you graduate. The ability to set goals, stay organized, solve problems creatively, and reflect on your progress will serve you in every area of life—from college to career to personal growth.

    What You’ll Experience in class:

    • Setting personal learning goals at the start of each unit and checking your progress at the end
    • Completing self-assessments and reflections to understand your growth as a learner
    • Demonstrating persistence, creativity, and resourcefulness when facing challenges
    • Learning strategies for time management, organization, and independent learning

At Home: Help your student create a dedicated study space and routine. Celebrate effort and improvement, not just grades.

  • Our teaching is grounded in research-based practices and designed to meet every student where they are. Here's what you can expect:

    • Standards-Aligned Instruction: We follow the 2025 Georgia ELA Standards to ensure your student is prepared for college and career
    • Varied Learning Experiences: Reading, writing, speaking, listening, creative projects, technology integration, and more
    • Clear Expectations & Feedback: You'll always know what success looks like, and we'll provide regular, specific feedback to help you improve
    • Student Choice & Voice: Opportunities to choose topics, texts, and formats that interest you
    • Open Communication: We welcome questions, concerns, and conversations from students and families at any time
