Developing Successful Learners Through GROWL Dispositions

Success in high school and beyond requires more than just studying for tests or completing assignments. At Burke County High School, we focus on developing key characteristics that help our students excel not only in their classes but also in their future careers and college experiences. We call these the GROWL dispositions.

What is GROWL?

Goal Oriented

Setting clear goals and developing plans to achieve them is essential for success. Our students learn to break down large projects into manageable steps, track their progress, and adjust their strategies when needed. This skill is valuable whether you're planning for college applications, managing multiple class assignments, or working toward personal achievements.

Resourceful

In today's world, knowing how to find and use information effectively is crucial. Being resourceful means taking initiative to solve problems, whether that's using online research tools, consulting with teachers during office hours, or connecting with study groups. This independence and problem-solving ability prepares our students for the expectations of college and the workplace.

Open-minded

The ability to consider different perspectives and adapt to new ideas is essential in our diverse world. Open-minded students engage meaningfully in class discussions, consider alternative viewpoints in their research, and approach new challenges with flexibility. These skills are particularly valuable in advanced coursework, college seminars, and future career environments.

Willing to Collaborate

Strong collaboration skills are essential in today's interconnected world. Our students develop the ability to work effectively in teams, contribute their strengths to group projects, and learn from their peers. These experiences mirror the teamwork required in college projects and professional settings.

Lifelong Learner

Education doesn't end with graduation. We encourage our students to develop curiosity about their world and take ownership of their learning journey. This mindset helps them adapt to new challenges, pursue ongoing professional development, and engage with evolving technologies and ideas throughout their careers.

Why GROWL Matters

These characteristics represent the skills and attitudes that successful students demonstrate in high school and carry forward into their college years and professional lives. When students develop these dispositions, they're better equipped to:

  • Take ownership of their education
  • Navigate challenging coursework
  • Balance multiple responsibilities
  • Prepare for college-level expectations
  • Develop professional workplace skills

Supporting GROWL at Home

Parents play an important role in reinforcing these characteristics. Support your student's growth by:

  • Discussing their academic and career goals
  • Encouraging independent problem-solving
  • Valuing diverse perspectives in family discussions
  • Supporting their collaborative projects
  • Modeling continuous learning in your own life

At Burke County High School, we believe in preparing our students not just for graduation, but for lifelong success. The GROWL dispositions help build the foundation for that success, creating confident, capable young adults ready to meet tomorrow's challenges.
