Measuring Our Impact Together

This year, our school is focused on understanding the impact of our teaching through meaningful data collection and providing feedback that truly empowers student growth. We're both passionate about partnering with you to make these goals a reality in your classroom, no matter what subject you teach.

Think of us as your dedicated collaborators. We're here to explore effective ways to gather and use data to understand the impact of your strategies and to develop feedback techniques that help your students learn and improve. We work together, bringing our combined expertise to support you through the Impact Cycle.

Our Partnership: Focused on Impactful Data and Feedback
Instructional coaching with us is centered on helping you achieve our school-wide goals for data and feedback, while also honoring your individual aspirations for your students.

Together, we will:
  • Identify clear goals for student learning that we can measure effectively.
  • Explore diverse and practical strategies for collecting meaningful data on student progress.
  • Learn how to analyze that data from multiple perspectives to understand the impact of your teaching.
  • Develop and refine feedback techniques that are clear, specific, actionable, and student-centered.
  • Reflect collaboratively on how data and feedback are influencing student learning and adjust our strategies together.
We believe that by working in partnership, we can make data a powerful lens for understanding our impact and feedback a significant driver of student success.

How Our Partnership Supports Data and Feedback Goals
Drawing on our combined experience and expertise, we can offer tailored support in areas such as:
  • Identifying key data points to track student progress within your specific content area.
  • Exploring a range of manageable methods for data collection, from formative to summative.
  • Developing collaborative systems for analyzing student work and assessment data to inform instructional decisions.
  • Crafting varied feedback strategies, including written, oral, and peer feedback, that align with learning goals.
  • Helping students understand and utilize feedback effectively to take ownership of their learning journey.
  • Using data to identify effective teaching strategies and areas for collective inquiry and growth.
  • Making learning visible through data tracking, student self-assessment, and effective communication of progress.

The Impact Cycle: Our Data-Informed Path to Improvement
Jim Knight's Impact Cycle

The Impact Cycle provides a clear and collaborative structure for our partnership, with a strong emphasis on data and feedback:
  1. Identify (with a shared data focus): Together, we'll clearly define a student learning goal and determine how we will measure progress using specific and relevant data.
  2. Learn (informed by diverse feedback approaches): We'll explore a variety of instructional strategies and feedback techniques, drawing on our different experiences and perspectives, all aligned with your learning goals.
  3. Improve (driven by collaborative data analysis): You'll implement the strategies and collect data on student learning. We'll then analyze this data together, sharing our insights to understand the impact of your teaching and refine our approach, including our feedback methods.

At Burke County High School, we believe in making learning clear and focused for all students. That's why you'll see daily Learning Intentions and Success Criteria posted in our classrooms and often referenced in student work.

Think of the Learning Intention as the destination for the day's learning. It clearly states what students will learn or understand by the end of the lesson. It answers the question: "What will I learn today?"

The Success Criteria are like the roadmap to that destination. They outline the specific steps students need to take or the evidence they need to show to demonstrate they have met the learning intention. It answers the question: "How will I know I'm successful?"

By sharing the Learning Intention and Success Criteria, we aim to:

Help students understand the purpose of each lesson.

Provide a clear target for student learning.

Empower students to take ownership of their learning.

Keep parents informed about what their child is learning and how they are being assessed.

We encourage you to talk to your child about the daily Learning Intentions and Success Criteria. It's a great way to start a conversation about their learning!
