WHO IS TO BLAME? ESSAY
PROMPT/TASK
Make a claim where you pick the character(s) you feel is most to blame for Romeo and Juliet’s deaths and then support your claim with specific textual evidence.
Make sure your claim is valid and logical:
• Remember logical arguments are based on evidence and fact, not emotions or propaganda
• Use multiple supporting details and specific examples [at least 4 total]
• Do not “stretch” a cause and effect relationship
• Consider counterarguments [be sure to address in thesis statement]
Remember...
• your response should include at least four paragraphs. Make an arguable claim, and include at least four quotations from the play
• to properly cite your textual evidence: “Go to, go to. / You are a saucy boy” (1.5 or Act 1 Scene 5)
• to set the context for the quotations before you use it and offer an analysis of the quotations that connect them to the thesis/topic sentence:
Example:
Capulet fuels Tybalt’s fiery nature even more when he says, “Go to, go to. / You are a saucy boy” (1.5). Capulet’s dismissal of Tybalt’s desire to punish Romeo not only humbles Tybalt, but it also further enrages him to the point that he will not be happy until Romeo is dead.
