9th Grade Literature and Composition is a year course that is designed for students who are reading on or above the 9th grade level and who are knowledgeable of the fundamentals of literature and composition. Students should be capable of completing outside reading and writing assignments as expectations of this course. Emphasis will be placed on studying literature through a thematic lens, focusing on analysis and comparison. There will also be emphasis on understanding themes in literature, studying English grammar and usage, writing in various styles and from multiple perspectives, introducing research skills, and developing appropriate vocabulary skills. This course is broken up into four 9-week units, two of those focusing on literary texts and two focusing on informational texts.

How I was in a right mind when I wished to leave the land of the Cicones. Survivors from the town we wreckaged ran for help and soon an army was upon us. We had to leave, too out numbered to fight. We lost many comrades, and Zeus did not agree with our choices. He struck us a storm, giving us many problems with the sail and control of the ship.
We had strayed for 17 days, when we happened upon the land of the Lotus-Eaters. They were too joyful and silly, offering us the insidious Lotus plant as a treat for our salted stomachs. Three of my men did in fact take part of this leaf, yet fell prey upon its spell and no longer desired to come home. Such a sight I wish never to see again, as we herded them on board and were forced to strap them down as we made our get away.
